Three scientists have won the Nobel prize 2016 in physics for their work on the “Theoretical discoveries of topological phase transitions and topological phases of matter“. According to the www.nobelprize.org it was divided, one half awarded to David J. Thouless, the other half jointly to F. Duncan M. Haldane and J. Michael Kosterlitz. The work helps explain why some materials have unexpected electrical properties, such as superconductivity, and in future the work could pave the way for quantum computers.
