Professor Juan José Palacios is the coordinator of the M-ERA.NET Consortium project, ‘Altermagnets: From Theory to Reality (ALTMAG)’, which aims to establish altermagnets, a newly emerging class of magnetic materials that bridge the gap between ferromagnets and antiferromagnets, as a sustainable platform for next-generation electronics. The project will catalogue and prioritise earth-abundant altermagnetic materials, explore non-collinear orders and topological traits, and synthesise and benchmark the most promising candidates for integration into devices such as spin-splitter elements, spin valves and spin photodetectors. Ultimately, ALTMAG will enable field-free, ultra-low-power logic, memory and sensing applications, thereby reinforcing Europe’s technological sovereignty in spintronics and advanced magnetic materials.
