Their Majesties received last Monday, 6th of June, in the Zarzuela Palace directors and representatives of 33 centers and units that have been awarded with the highest institutional recognition to scientific research in Spain, the Accreditation Severo Ochoa and María de Maeztu. The event was presented by Spanish Secretary of State for Research, Development and Innovation, Carmen Vela who highlighted the importance of these centers for Spanish science.
These distinctions are awarded since 2011 after a rigorous evaluation process carried out by international scientific committees in three areas: Life Sciences and Medicine, Mathematics, Experimental Sciences and Engineering and Humanities and Social Sciences. Accredited centers and units stand out by international impact of their scientific contributions, its highly innovating capacity and interest of their research in relation to the socio-economic environment. These centers are also benchmark institutions capable of attracting international talent.
Since 2015 this accreditation was expanded with a new approach for research units called María de Maeztu. This initiative recognizes excellence in small centers mainly located in universities.
