Ferry Prins starts his ERC Consolidator Grant for his project EnVision (Engineered Carrier Transport in Nanostructured Semiconductors using Functional Disorder). The EnVision project will explore “functional disorder” in nanostructured semiconductors to improve energy transport. The study of disorder in nanostructured semiconductors to enhance energy transport will be using super-resolution optical microscopy to observe carrier motion at nanometre and sub-nanosecond scales, providing detailed insights into transport dynamics.
The main goal of these studies is to define design rules for exploiting disorder as a positive force in energy transport. Contrary to conventional wisdom, recent theories suggest that disorder can facilitate carrier transport along energy gradients. Controlled disorder can lead to more efficient energy transport and harvesting.
