Time-varying media consists of materials or metamaterial constructs whose properties change in an ultra-fast manner, at time scales comparable to the frequency of operation. By breaking temporal symmetries, they enable light-matter interactions that cannot be observed in static (i.e., non-time-modulated) materials. In this talk, we will discuss the symmetries of time-varying media and how they lead to new opportunities in quantum and thermal light emission.
