Using extreme magnetic field microscopy to visualize correlated electron materials - PNICTEYESGrants: The European Research Council (ERC) has announced the awarding of its Starting Grants 2015.

Isabel Guillamón, RyC research fellow in the Laboratorio de Bajas Temperaturas at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (LBTUAM) and member of the Condensed Matter Physics Center (IFIMAC), has obtained an ERC Starting Grant awarded by the European Research Council (ERC).

The ERC project entitled “Using extreme magnetic field microscopy to visualize correlated electron materials – PNICTEYES” will receive 1.7 M€ during 5 years. Within the project, Dr. Guillamón and her team will build new scanning tunneling microscopes (STM) for extreme magnetic fields. A new superconducting solenoid capable of providing magnetic fields up to 22 T, i.e. approximately 500 000 times the Earth’s magnetic field and about 20 times the field produced by neodymiun magnets, will be installed at the premises of UAM. UAM will host the most intense magnetic field available outside international high magnetic field facilities, as the European Magnetic Field Laboratory (EMFL) or the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory at the US (MagLab). Dr. Guillamón and her team will build a microscope for the 22 T magnet at UAM and another microscope to be used at these facilities for magnetic fields above 30 T. This will improve the experimental capacities of high magnetic field facilities in the field of microscopy. Microscopes under very high magnetic fields will allow the direct visualization of electronic correlations and give conclusive answers to key questions in Condensed Matter Physics. High field microscopes can be used in graphene, nanotechnology, superconductivity or magnetism.  Within the framework of this project, Dr. Guillamón and her team will investigate the origin of high temperature superconductivity in the new iron-based superconductors.
