The Science Behind Climate Change – Workshops with Cáritas

The Science Behind Climate Change – Workshops with Cáritas - Featured

Over three afternoons, the IFIMAC research team—Amalia Coro, Antonella Cutrupi, Raquel Utrera Melero, and Ferry Prins—helped make science accessible and engaging by breaking down complex ideas into hands-on activities. These workshops were held as part of the Researchers at Schools (RAS) event, part of the European Researchers’ Night in Madrid 2024-2025 project of the UAM. Primary and secondary school students recreated Eunice Foote’s experiment, observing how a container filled with CO₂ heats up more under light than one filled with normal air. It was a simple but effective way to see the greenhouse effect in action. Participants also explored energy and its connection to climate change. Through small experiments with renewable energy, they saw how everyday materials can help explain how energy is generated and used. The visit to the university gave students a glimpse into where scientific work happens. We hope the experience sparked curiosity and maybe even inspired some future scientists.
