Title: The How and Why of New Materials Physics: insight and innovations
When: Monday, March 27, (2023), 11:00
Place: Department of Condensed Matter Physics, Faculty of Sciences, Module 3, Seminar Room (5th Floor).
Speaker: Paul C Canfield, Ameslab and Iowa State University, USA.

In this seminar I will review how new Materials Physics can be used to design and discover new compounds and ground states. I will also focus on, in the second half, how to use recent innovations in fritted crucible design to more effectively determine regions of multinary phase diagrams and, more importantly, allow for efficient growth of single crystalline samples. Examples drawn from studies of quasicrystals, heavy fermions, ferromagnets, antiferromagnets, and metal to insulator systems will be discussed.
