Single-molecule junctions offer great possibilities for exploring physical phenomena at the nanoscale. The electron current alone often does not contain enough information, but a combination of the time-averaged current and the fluctuations in the current (shot noise) provide a key to many interesting phenomena. Exploring these phenomena for a wide range of voltage bias settings and junction conductances requires developing new instrumentation. Some of the main early experimental results will be presented for sketching the background, followed by a discussion of magnetic properties, inelastic scattering effects and the role of electron correlations.
